Above: The moment I saw this puzzle it reminded me of Riven. The game unfolds as you explore and begin to learn; puzzles are seamlessly integrated into the game and are challenging but not impossibly difficult. Occasionally, an important phrase or clue in a book—many of which are dotted around Hunrath and filled with handwritten notes from the town’s missing denizens—will be overtly highlighted or written in a different color. I've been a die hard fan of Cyan since Myst first came out. He also enjoys talking about PC games, which he now no longer does alone. Additionally, Cyan’s decision to put Kickstarter ‘Backer Reward Items’ as unique objects scattered throughout the game world (designed in-part by people who pledged over $850 during its 2013 Kickstarter) is a big misstep in Obduction’s world design. Instead, they purposefully obfuscated it and separated the controls by loading screens. In true Myst fashion, it presents me with a problem—often a locked door or a blocked path—and asks me to find a way to proceed using clues I’ve probably already come across without realizing it. I'd unlock a majestic gate, the soundtrack would swell, and I'd discover a breathtaking new region, full of fresh, difficult puzzles. However weak the ending is, it was the journey that made the biggest impression on me. Obduction review A beautiful, if simple, puzzle game that remains faithful to Myst without feeling dated. It was essentially like playing with giant blocks, planning out and rearranging them to build a clear path for me to walk through. By clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot's Sign up to get the best content of the week, and great gaming deals, as picked by the editors. They also separated how you could view the puzzle by more loading screens. Although clever, these scenarios often require a large amount of backtracking and the endurance to withstand a collection of loading screens as you travel back and forth--a process that grows increasingly exhausting. This Villein number "worksheet" was a bit too on the nose. Punching buttons to enter a code or dragging your mouse to pull a lever gives each step in a puzzle’s solution a pleasing, tangible quality. Let me paint you a picture of why this is a bad game. Out of the Myst and into the new century with all the bells and whistles.
Edmond Tran Nobody’s here - well... almost nobody. I had to flip lots of rusty levers, learn that alien numerical system in base 4, and write down every number combination I saw—though Cyan has added a screenshot button and a viewable gallery in the menu, so you don’t strictly need a pen and paper. New York, I had to manipulate large sections of the level by jumping between worlds, and it made me wish that idea had been used more in other areas of the game as well. Thank you for signing up to PC Gamer. Characteristic of Obduction's roots in the Myst series, it’s the game’s encouragement for discovery that makes puzzles fun--and it’s their complex, mechanical nature that makes them so satisfying to decipher. More worlds to explore, more complexity from its puzzles, and even more of that nostalgic feeling it evoked so well.
Nobody’s here - well... almost nobody. While this initial sun-drenched area feels invitingly warm on first glance, there’s also an underlying sense of otherworldly menace.
What is it? In its final hours, Obduction introduces intricately grand puzzles that involve environmental manipulation and traveling between different, interconnected locations at predetermined points. The only issues I've had with this game so far are some technical glitches but honestly on the day of launch every PC Game I've had at launch has had issues. You're in a place called Hunrath, with pieces of earth scattered within an alien landscape. It’s also immensely helped by the lighting and model detail the Unreal Engine allows, ensuring that Obduction only feels faithful to its predecessors, not dated by them. A lot of games coming out of the Kickstarter-fueled "adventure game renaissance" have been disappointments. Well OK, I haven't run into any bells and whistles yet, but that's not saying knowing Cyan that either or both could show up down the road as I continue to progress through the various worlds. In order to both discover and solve problems, you’re required to scour the meticulously detailed world to find levers, switches, cryptic clues, narrative details, ciphers, and other useful items. And the ones that it does have are not gamebreaking for me and I'm running a setup that's a little under the min specs for the game. More than once I’d see something I thought was part of a solution—a road sign with numbers, a painting, a compass—only to get close and see a pop-up with the text “Backer Reward Item” to let me know I was wasting my time. But challenges become increasingly difficult and complex, and a lapse in patience or observation can lead to punishing gaps in your knowledge of the world's logic, which can take a painful amount of time to identify and ultimately resolve. The Villein number pad on the left, with a normal number translator on the right. Obduction’s obstacles often involve manipulating physical objects and contraptions. Visit our corporate site. Each world has its own setting and color scheme, and they are all absolutely gorgeous. One 'puzzle' in this game is remedial, it's essentially just an average board of Pipe-Mania, nothing special. Distant horizons are lined with enormous purple crystalline formations and floating islands. I often got real, physical headaches while playing Obduction. Hunrath is dotted with other small props that can help you solve puzzles even if they aren’t directly part of the solution. Multiplayer: None Myst's spiritual successor Obduction drags its heritage into the modern age with aplomb, though the puzzles aren't quite as fiendishly hard as Riven's.
Tom is PC Gamer’s Associate Editor. This is your story now. Don’t get me started on how unnecessarily long it takes to get through the Gauntlet and the Maze sections towards the end of the game due to these factors. You will routinely be confronted with locked doors that frustrate until you scour the land to find their obtusely hidden codes/keys, this can be maddening yet it's quite satisfying once you finally start popping them open and discovering what they hide. This directionless feeling does initially enhance the mystique of the game’s first half, when locations are mostly undiscovered and you lack a holistic understanding of how the world works--new discoveries are especially magical at this point because they are full of unknowns. I didn’t have much trouble tracking down answers or clues, and sometimes it was too easy to tell when a something was going to be important later.
Well worth the wait -- Cyan has done it again.

Obduction’s sound design and art direction are some of the main reasons I enjoyed it as much as I did—including its use FMV actors, which are just the right balance of charming and campy. Real-world actors portray strange characters in odd hologram messages, and every part of that feels a little out of place. In a game about carefully observing your surroundings for clues and answers, littering the environment with visually distinct, eye-catching, and often interactive objects that have no bearing on the puzzles you are trying to solve is a big annoyance. But when I eventually did stumble upon that missing link--an obscured set of stairs, a line in a book I’d previously dismissed--the pieces fell into place, and my frustrations all but disintegrated.
It was a very cool section of the game if, once again, straightforward in how to go about solving it. Obduction doesn’t draw attention to its obstacles--there’s no strict order of progression, and its puzzles are hidden in plain sight as part of the environment. Unfortunately, the last hour or so of Obduction slows down and pretty much lacks any puzzles altogether, leading up to two potential endings that both left me confused and unsatisfied—even after I’d read every plot-filled page and book I could find in the game. Most puzzles were more cerebral, with solutions hidden in the environment. Everyday life is gone.
